Product Information

This membrane model promotes a greater understanding of the structure and dynamics of cellular membranes. The phospholipid molecules are represented by beads (as the polar heads) and by red straws (as the non-polar lipid tails). The cylinder suspended in the middle represents the intramembranous protein.

The beads are immersed in a water and mineral oil solution that acts as the aqueous cytoplasm. When gently agitated, the molecules seek their proper position and result in a representative fluid mosaic membrane bilayer. Developed by Werner Schultz. Includes instructions. Grades 9–AP.
