Product Information

William H. Humphries and Cassandra D. Watson

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease in the United States today, and the most common genetic disorder in the Caucasian population. An estimated 30,000 Americans have the disease, and up to 8 million may be carriers.

In this &"approach to understanding the Human Genome Project in correlation with Genetic Disorders&", students are taken into the life of &"John&" and his family, and their struggle with CF. Students perform a series of activities that simulate genetic testing and counseling.

They determine normal and CF gene sequences by examining a Cystic Fibrosis gene overhead, locate and perform a close examination of the Delta 508 Genome, learn how to read a Dot Hybridization Assay, and consider the ethics of screening for genetic mutations. Provides background information, and covers symptoms, treatment including new gene therapies, and pathology.

This lab was developed by William H. Humphries, Director of Biotechnology and Research at the Richardson High School Arts, Law, and Science Magnet, with Cassandra D. Watson.

Includes: Manual with blackline masters, 1&" 3-ring white view-binder. Required but not included: posterboard (28 cm x 9 cm), rubber cement, scissors, calculator, red paper.

Grades 9-10.
