Product InformationNot only are insects cheap, abundant and easy to find, they also lend themselves to studies of diversity, genetics, taxonomy, locomotion, ecology, water quality, anatomy, physiology - and geology! In this Paula Waggy developed kit, students assemble collections of 10 insects representing 8 orders.Using a geologic period time chart and information on the common orders of insects that evolved during each period, they place their insects (on a Styrofoam strip) with the chart. This activity is aligned with National Standards as it emphasizes the evolution of life at a level that is appropriate for all students. It can also be used as a springboard for further investigations into extinction, uniformitarianism, and the concept that the present is the key to the past. Grades 8-10. Includes materials for 15 groups: Styrofoam, pins/90, plastic zip bags, bug box, geologic history of insects pad and transparencies, insect drawing transparencies, markers, instructions.
